53rd Thessaloniki International Film Festival: Tribute to Theo Angelopoulos

by Dimitris Ioannou

For all of the difficulties, all the frustrations and hardships, filmmaking is, finally, a human adventure...” Theo Angelopoulos

The Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF) is back and this year honours the great Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos, who died on January this year on a road accident. The 53rd TIFF will take place from November 2 to 11, 2012 in the beautiful city of Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece.

Defying the European crisis, that the last few years has submerged Greece's economy into new levels, the Festival invites both filmmakers and audience to be there and support that big celebration of film. With a lower budget than other years, but without loosing a bit of it's quality, stands strong and dedicated, as always, to independent cinema. They promise a ten day event full of films from all over the world, cinematic surprises, distinguished guests, tributes, Master Classes, round table discussions and parallel events.

Holy Motors (2012) the provocative film of Leos Carax that divided the audience at the Cannes Film Festival this year, winning ultimately the Award of the Youth, will open the Festival at the cinema Olympion. The “weird” movie of the French filmmaker, starring among others Denis Lavant, Eva Mendes and the Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue, tells the story of a man named Oscar and his -from dawn till dusk- journey between multiple parallel lives in the center of a dreamy Paris. On the other hand, the film In Another Country (2012) by the Korean writer-director Hong Sang-soo, which will close the Festival, takes us on the Korean seaside town of Mohang where we find the amazing French actress Isabelle Huppert in a triple role. She plays three identically named French tourists who each visits the same resort for a different reason.

On the “International Competition” we have 15 movies competing for the Golden, Silver and Bronze Alexander, the top prizes of the Festival. The movies are: A Hijacking by Tobias Lindholm (Demark), A Month in Thailand by Paul Negoescu (Romania), Aqui u alla by Antonio Méndez  Espraza (Spain-USA-Mexico), Epilogue by Amir Manor (Israel), I Am Not a Hipster by Destin Daniel Cretton (USA), Kinshasa Kids by Marc-Henri Wajnberg (Belgium-France), Living by Vasily Sigarev (Russia), Loving by Sławomir Fabicki (Poland), Mold by Ali Aydin (Turkey-Germany), Our Little Differences by Sylvie Michel (Germany), Southwest by Eduardo Nunes (Brazil), Taboor by Vahid Vakilifar (Iran), The Color of the Chameleon by Emil Christov (Bulgaria) and two films from Greece, Boy Eating the Bird's Food by Ektoras Ligizos and Joy by Ilias Yannakakis.

The “Open Horizons” section divided in the core programme and the special screenings, include 50 films that where especially chosen by the director of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Dimitris Eipides. The section itself focuses on works that represent the most recent trends in worldwide independent production, as well as thematically original, aesthetically challenging and socially minded films.

Among the films that comprise the “Open Horizons” section are Costas Gavras' newest film, Capital with Gabriel Byrne and Gad Elmaleh, Sergei Loznitsa’s second fiction feature, In the Fog, that won the FIPRESCI Award in the 2012 Cannes IFF, the first two films of a trilogy from the Austrian director Ulrich Seidl Paradise: Love and Paradise: Faith (Special Jury Prize in the 2012 Venice IFF), War Witch by Kim Nguyen with Rachel Mwanza who won the Silver Bear for lead actress at the 2012 Berlin IFF and the Best Actress and Best Narrative Feature Awards at the 2012 Tribeca IFF, and Dead Europe by Tony Krawitz based on the novel by Christos Tsiolkas, about a Greek-Australian man named Isaac, who is travelling to Europe to discover his family’s roots and uncover its secrets.

With renewed vision and films of all genres the 53rd Thessaloniki International Film Festival embraces it's dark side and establishes a new section entitled “Night Views”. “Night Views” will focus on cinema that experiments with both form and content, breaks taboos, explores the darkest sides of human nature and defies mainstream concerns and conventions. This first year the Festival will showcase the work of two filmmakers, Greek Costas Zapas, with the films Uncut Family (2004), The Last Porn Movie (2006), Minor Freedoms (2008) and The Rebellion of Red Maria (2010), and Israeli Lior Shamriz with Japan Japan (2007), Saturn Returns (2009), Mirrors for Princes (2011), as well as his latest film, A Low Life Mythology (2012).

Like every year since 1994 when it first introduced, the “Balkan Survey” section of the TIFF, showcases a selection of the most important Balkan films of the year. Dimitris Kerkinos, the programme coordinator of this section, achieved to gather 13 films, both shorts and features, from Turkey, Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, among other countries. At the same time, a retrospective with the work of Christian Mungiu, one of the foremost representatives of the Romanian New Wave, will be shown at the Festival.

Except Mungiu's films, the work of three completely different but very charismatic and unique directors will be celebrated this year. Aki Kaurismaki (Finland), Bahman Ghobadi (Iran) and Andreas Dresen (Germany). The audience will have the chance to see eleven films by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki, including the first feature film he ever made back in 1983 with title Crime and Punishment, as well as his latest film La Havre, for which he took the FIPRESCI Award and the Ecumenical Jury Special Mention at the 2011 Cannes IFF.

The Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi is coming with five films including his latest installment Rhino Season, which is inspired by the true story of a Kurdish poet who was imprisoned for three decades, starring Behrouz Vossoughi and Monica Bellucci as the poet and his wife.  Andreas Dresen who was born in East Germany, will present to the Greek audience a small selection of his work, including his newest film Stopped on Track, which is about a family man diagnosed with brain cancer. All four directors are invited to attend the event.

When it comes to the Greek section of the Festival, all words run out. Eleni Androutsopoulou, the programme coordinator, achieved to find 14 films “made in Greece” that cover all sectors of the New Greek cinema. Leaving out the two competing for the top awards, we have: 11 Meetings with my Father by Nikos Kornilios, A Ship to Palestine by Nikos Koundouros, A.C.A.B. His films have been shown at the most important film festivals around the world. Although he has been nominated many times, he finaly won the Palme d'Or at the 51st Cannes Film Festival in 1998 for the movie Eternity and a Day.  He shot his first feature film in 1970 with the title Reconstruction.

by Dimitris Ioannou

No, don't be confused, it's not the ghost of Lady Di, but the actress Naomi Watts portraying the role of Princess Diana in the upcoming movie, “Caught In Flight”.

The 43-year-old actress looks stunning wearing a jewelry similar to the one once wore Diana, in the official still from the movie. The resemblance to the late Princess is more than amazing.

The movie is currently filming in London and is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2013.

Gary Oldman signs up for “RoboCop” remake

by Dimitris Ioannou

Hollywood loves remakes and when their followed by a big movie star, they're guaranteed success. The classic sci-fi action film “RoboCop” is the next movie to get a new modern version, and Gary Oldman has just signed to play one of the leading roles.

Oldman will play Norton, the scientist responsible for creating “RoboCop”, alongside Joel Kinnaman, known from the US version of “The Killing”, in the role of “RoboCop”.

Kinnaman recently talked about the film and said: “I sincerely hope they’re going for an R rating, because I can’t imagine how RoboCop could be PG-13. That would be a huge mistake. If I have any say in it, I will fight very hard for it. It has to be violent.”

“30 Rock” will end after 7th season

by Dimitris Ioannou

Today is a bad day for Liz Lemon as NBC's boss Robert Greenblatt officially confirmed that “30 Rock's” 7th season next year will be the last one for the successful comedy TV series.

Last week the network announced that “30 Rock” was picked up for 13 episodes and although yesterday Greenblatt denied that any decisions have been made about the future of the show, today everything changed.

But don't worry “30 Rock” fans, because Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and the entire cast will say goodbye with an hour long last episode.

And... that's a dealbreaker, ladies!

CBS cancels “CSI: Miami”

by Dimitris Ioannou

CBS has officially canceled “CSI: Miami” and as a result the favorite show wont come back next year for an 11th season. Horatio Cane played by David Caruso and his team should pack their bags and leave the sandy beaches of Miami for good.

This is the first spin-off of the CSI franchise to get off the air, despite the strong international sales and the fresh off-network syndication deal with AMC that would've covered an 11th season.

In an official statement the network said: “CSI: Miami leaves an amazing television legacy - a signature look and style, global popularity and as a key player in CBS’s rise to the top over the past decade. We thank all the producers - led by Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and Ann Donahue - and its talented cast, led by David Caruso, for 10 outstanding seasons. Viewers around the world will continue to enjoy rebroadcasts of CSI: Miami in syndication and on key digital platforms for many years to come.”

New “Dark Knight Rises” trailer has arrived

by Dimitris Ioannou

The third and probably the last trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” has just arrived and it has a lot to offer. It is dark, epic and with a lot of new footage including more of Anne Hathaway in the role of Catwoman, Tom Hardy as Bane and even Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In the 2:20 minute video we find Christian Bale's Batman into a very difficult position. Bane seems to be the toughest villain he ever had to deal with. But will he be able to stop him?

“The Dark Knight Rises” is Christopher Nolan's big finale to his Batman universe and hopefully the best one. Among the cast, we also find Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Marion Cotillard. The movie is set to hit the cinemas on July 20.

Chloe Moretz to play in “Carrie” remake

by Dimitris Ioannou

Chloe Moretz, the talented 15-year-old girl who played a young vampire in “Let Me In”, is about to play the leading role in the new Stephen King's “Carrie” remake by the director Kimberly Pierce, mostly known for 1999's “Boys Don't Cry”. Chloe says it will not remind at all of Brian De Palma's version.

“I'm actually not looking at the original,” she says, “even though De Palma's movie was one of the best movies ever made. It's completely iconic and I'm proud to be able to be doing a retooling of it. We're kind of going off the book.”

“It's darker and much more psychological,” she continues. “More 'Black Swan'. You're really looking into her mind and it really looks into the relationship of Margaret and Carrie. It's set in modern time, so it's a lot different.”

And as for her character: “It's something that's very different from me,” Moretz says of Carrie's appearance. “It's an out of body thing. I'm becoming a totally different person for it. I'm letting go of all of my self-esteem issues and just kind of going into it. You have to.”

“Carrie” is scheduled for a US release on March 13, 2013.

by Dimitris Ioannou

Chloe Sevigny stripes down, covers with a sheet and lays in her pink bed for the new issue cover of New York magazine.

It just felt womb-like."

Chloe is currently filming “Black Dog, Red Dog” alongside James Franco and Olivia Wild, while she is also starring to the Linda Lovelace biopic titled “Lovelace”, with Amanda Seyfried in the leading role and James Franco, Wes Bentley, Eric Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sharon Stone and Hank Azaria among others.

Chris Evans covers the May issue of Details magazine

 by Dimitris Ioannou

“The Avengers” star Chris Evans covers the May issue of Details magazine, looking hotter than ever and proving that he is not the upright, spit-polished superhero that we see on screen. The 30-year-old actor talks to Adam Sachs about the movie, his relationship with his mother, Buddhism and a lot more.

Evans explained to the magazine his hesitation for playing a character like Captain America, not only because with blockbusters like that he losses even more of his remaining anonymity, but mostly because the bigger the movie is, the more nervous he gets. “I get very nervous, I shit the bed if I have to present something on stage or if I'm doing press. Because it's just you.Do you know how badly I audition? Fifty percent of the time I have to walk out of the room. I'm naturally very pale, so I turn red and sweat. And I have to literally walk out. Sometimes mid-audition. You start having these conversations in your brain. 'Chris, don't do this. Chris, take it easy. You're just sitting in a room with a person saying some words, this isn't life. And you're letting this affect you? Shame on you'”.

“I think my daytime person is different than my nighttime person," Evans says. "With my high-school buddies, we drink beer and talk sports and it's great. The kids in my Buddhism class in L.A., they're wildly intelligent, and I love being around them, but they're not talking about the Celtics. And that's part of me. It's a strange dichotomy. I don't mind being a certain way with some people and having this other piece of me that's just for me."

He is very close to his mother, so close that she is the first person to learn everything. Even when he had sex for the first time! “I raced home and was like, 'Mom, I just had sex! Where's the clit?'” he sais, although he admits he never got an answer. “Still don't know where it is, man, I just don't know. Make some movies, you don't have to know...”

The photos are by the photographer Norman Jean Roy. You can read the entire interview at Details.com

Chloe Moretz stars in “Hick”

by Dimitris Ioannou

The 15-year-old Chloe Moretz stars in the new film “Hick” by Derick Martini the American director that in 2008 brought us “Lymelife”. In the new red band trailer released yesterday we find Moretz playing with guns, dressed twice her age and more mature than ever, even on “30 Rock”.

The beautiful blonde actress, most known from the movies “Kick-Ass”, “Let Me In” and lately “Hugo”, plays a 13-year-old girl named Luli McMullen who runs from home, trying to escape her mom's alcoholic boyfriends and to pursue fame. In her path she finds trouble when she meets a boy older than her named Eddie (Eddie Redmayne). Fortunately soon comes to her life the troubled but caring Glenda, played by the “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively.

The movie is an adaptation of Andrea Ports novel by the same name and alongside Moretz, we also find Juliette Lewis and Alec Baldwin. “Hick” is scheduled to open in theatres on May 11th.

Here is the official synopsis of “Hick” and below the trailer, check it out:

Thirteen-year-old Nebraska girl Luli (Chloe Grace Moretz) has been dealt a rough hand. Her mother and father spend their evenings getting obnoxiously plastered at the local watering hole, then go at it like a pair of trashy, drunk teenagers. Worse, they manage to throw down at Luli’s birthday party.
Certain she’s destined for a more glamorous life, Luli packs her things — including her new birthday gift, a Smith & Wesson .45 — and hitches a ride to Vegas. Dressed like a girl twice her age, she’s immediately picked up by a wannabe cowboy named Eddie (Eddie Redmayne, a sensational actor on the rise), who walks with a limp and acts a little too crazy for comfort. The two fail to hit it off and Luli is ejected from the car. Luckily, she soon meets Glenda (Blake Lively), a grifter who acts as Luli’s big sister — albeit one who offers her drugs and uses her as an accessory to a robbery. Just as things seem to be going moderately well for Luli, Eddie makes an unwelcome return and becomes increasingly difficult to evade.

Those nine people will have to decide the winners in the main categories between the 22 films in Competition. This year we find a very strong English-language presence in the lineup, maybe because the festival is dedicated to the 50 years from the death of Hollywood's idol, Marilyn Monroe.

The festival will open on May 16 with the movie “Moonrise Kingdom” by the American filmmaker Wes Anderson, most known for his movies “The Royal Tenebaums” and “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou”. David Cronenberg's “Cosmopolis” starring Robert Pattinson, Andrew Dominik's “Killing Them Softly” with Brad Pitt and Ray Liotta, and Lee Daniels' “Paperboy” with “High School Musical's” star Zac Efron, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman, are some of the most anticipated films.

Among other English-language filmmakers we see “Take Shelter” director Jeff Nichols, competing with “Mud” starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey, John Hillcoat with “Lawless” starring Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf, Walter Salles with Viggo Mortensesn, Kristen Stewart and last years winner Kirsten Dunst being “On the Road” and Ken Loach with “The Angels' Share” starring Roger Allam, John Henshaw and Daniel Portman.

International auteurs on the list include Michael Haneke with “Love” (Amour), Cristian Mungiu with “Beyond the Hills”, Sangsoo Hong with “In Another Country” (Da-Erun Na-Ra-E-Suh) and Abbas Kiarostami with “Like Someone in Love”.

The rest of the filmmakers competing for the Palme d'Or prize are: Jacques Audiard with “De Rouille Et D'os” starring Marion Cotillard, Leos Carax with “Holy Motors” starring Eva Mendes, Matteo Garrone with “Reality”, Im Sang-soo with “The Tast of Money” (Do-Nui Mat), Sergei Loznitsa with “In The Fog” (V Tuman), Yousry Nasrallah with “After The Battle” (Baad El Mawkeaa), Alain Resmais with “Vous N'avez Encore Rien Vu”, Carlos Reygadas with “Post Tenebras Lux”, Ulrich Seidle with “Paradise: Love” (Paradise: Liebe) and Thomas Vinterberg with “The Hunt” (Jagten).
